Why City of Virginia Beach IT?

We earned the prestigious CIO 100 award in 2018 and 2019. We have been named #1 among "Digital Cities" in our population category (250K-500K) by the Center for Digital Government four times over the past five years.

The IT Department is constantly evolving to meet residents' expectations of transparency, innovation and convenience in the digital age. Our software developers, engineers, analysts and other team members are reimagining how to make resident-government interactions more efficient while advancing City operations.

We Make IT Happen

From apps to maps, we are building resident-centric solutions to promote safety, security and accessibility. Our employees are empowered to embrace emerging technologies, seize opportunities and fortify the City's position as an international digital hub.

We are cultivating an environment where strategic thinkers are valued and groundbreaking ideas are implemented. In the IT Department, each day offers new challenges that require fresh perspectives and creative problem-solving. Our work drives change and influences decision-making across the City.

We Learn and Grow

Learning opportunities abound, and so does the potential to carve your own career path. Employees pursue cross-training and receive career support to accomplish their professional development goals. In our industry, the rapid pace of change presents an intellectual challenge and makes continuous education an inherent part of our job descriptions.

We welcome candidates who have the enthusiasm, talent and curiosity our business units thrive on. Collaboration is the cornerstone of our department: we produce better outcomes when we receive and consider diverse viewpoints.

We Are Connected

Having the right technology and infrastructure in place are critical components of our smart city strategy. The IT Department is expanding the City's high-speed optical fiber network, Next Generation Network (NGN), to connect remote facilities with the Municipal Center campus. This initiative aims to improve network speed and reliability while reducing broadband costs.

The shores of Virginia Beach serve as the landing point for transoceanic cables capable of transporting massive amounts of data. These cables have spurred the development of the Regional Connectivity Ring (RCR), which would connect the five Southside cities in Hampton Roads, with long-term plans to link to the Peninsula and Richmond.

The open-access dark fiber ring will serve as a catalyst for digital equity and economic growth. We are engaged in this exciting project to support smart region initiatives and accelerate innovation.

IT employees play a key role in local and regional efforts to:

  • Enhance the quality of life for residents.
  • Deliver a compelling visitor experience.
  • Create digitally-empowered communities.
  • Expand government digital services.
  • Develop transportation and innovation corridors.
  • Improve resilience and interoperability.
